Richard has lived in the Godalming area for most of his life and was educated at Cranleigh School (before taking his degree at Edinburgh University). Having worked at Lloyds in the City for 3 years, he qualified in 1978 with Baldocks in Guildford where he was a partner for many years. In 1994 Richard set up his own firm, Butler Sharp & Co, which in July 2001 merged with the AWB Partnership. A former hockey player, Richard lists amongst his interests bell-ringing, hill-walking and big-game fishing.
